Scary Halloween Cake {Ferocious Cupcake}

ferocious1

This scary Halloween cake is made with three layers of chocolate cake, vanilla bean Swiss meringue buttercream, marshmallow fondant, chocolate ganache, and black chocolate melts.

This scary guy is named Ferocious Cupcake, and he is so scary that he even scared my 7 year old son.  I had to keep him in the fridge with his face facing the back so my son wouldn’t see him haha.  To me, he looks like a really yummy cupcake with beautiful frosting, but comes alive at night and eats everything in sight. I thought about putting a bloody hand next to him, but my son said that it would scare the kids.

This cake has several steps but is pretty easy.  First, bake the cake in the cake mold.  The mold is two pieces and can be baked together.  I bought the mold here  It is made of silicon and is really easy to clean. 31Ff5jel7-L

Cool the top and bottom cake on a rack, and wash out the mold.  Melt the black candy melts.  In the bottom mold, spread the melted chocolate onto the edges.  Let it set in the fridge.

Put the cake inside the bottom mold and fill in the gaps and top with ganache.  To make it smooth, I use an offset spatula and spread it along the top of the mold.

Then, place the top part of the cupcake onto  the bottom part of the cupcake. Cover top with ganache, and fondant.  Make eyes and teeth with fondant. Paint the eyes and teeth with one of the methods below.

To paint the eyes onto the fondant you will need lime green color gel, red color, brown color gel, a small bowl, and a new paintbrush of good quality.  You will also need either vodka, lemon extract or lemon juice.  The  lemon extract, lemon juice, or vodka is to mix with the color gel to paint on the fondant. You can experiment and see what you prefer. Here is a list of the pros and cons of each choice.

Lemon juice: This doesn’t evaporate very quickly, so you’ll find yourself left with wet or tacky painted surfaces for a while. This means you can’t add detail on top of your work for some time.

Lemon extract: Extracts contain alcohol. Alcohol is quick to evaporate and so quick to dry, which is why lemon extract is sometimes recommended! Lemon extract can be pretty expensive if you are buying enough to paint the whole surface of the cake.  Another thing to consider is that you most likely will be able to taste the lemon on the fondant so if you use this method, make sure the lemon will go with the flavor of your cake.

Vodka:  It dries quickly which has its pros and cons; you can add another coat onto your work in around a minute, but you’ll need to add a few drops of vodka to your mix every so often.  Don’t worry about painting with alcohol on kids cakes because the alcohol evaporates away completely leaving nothing behind but your hard work!

  1. That is awesome, i love his spookiness. Hah, i saw it in my blogloving feed and i had to see more! I love my huge cupcake pan too, i may have to recreate a little furious fella like this for halloween parties. Don’t you love how easy marshmallow fondant is to work with?

    • Thanks Leslie! I always love hearing from you. Marshmallow fondant can get tricky for me, but this project it was actually easy because it didn’t need to be perfectly smooth lol
